> Permission prompts tempt people to skip them. Here is why that is risky, and how to keep Claude Code asking while answering in one keystroke.

Permission prompts are the price of letting an agent run commands on your machine. They are also why people reach for the flag that skips them: the work stops, you are in another window, and the prompt waits. Turning prompts off removes the safety. The better fix is to make each answer take a second.

## Why people skip permissions

- The agent stops for a yes or no, and you do not see it for a while.
- Many prompts are for harmless commands, so answering feels like busywork.
- Switching windows to answer breaks your focus.

## What you give up when you skip them

Claude Code names its skip flag `--dangerously-skip-permissions` for a reason: the agent can then run commands without asking, including ones you would have refused. A wrong command, a bad path or a surprise download runs before you can look at it. That is a lot to give up to save a few seconds.

## Keep the prompts, remove the slowdown

1. **Answer from anywhere.** With Herdbell a permission request shows as a card at your cursor, and you press **Return** to allow or **D** to deny. No window switch.
2. **Let Herdbell tell you.** The pointer glows amber the moment something needs you, so a prompt never sits unseen.
3. **Risky commands ask twice.** Herdbell asks for a second confirmation before a risky command is allowed.
4. **Pre-approve what is truly safe** in Claude Code's own permission settings, so you are only asked about the rest.

## If you are away

If nobody answers, the request does not get approved for you. After the wait you set in Settings (5 minutes by default) the agent falls back to its own prompt.

## Common questions

### Is --dangerously-skip-permissions safe?
It removes the check that stops an agent from running commands you would refuse, so it is risky by design. Keeping prompts on and answering them quickly is the safer way to work.

### Will Herdbell approve things automatically?
No. Herdbell only shows the request and sends back the answer you give. If you do not answer, the agent falls back to its own prompt.
