How to continue a Claude Code session in Codex or Cursor
Sometimes you want to move a job to another agent: you hit a usage limit, you want a second opinion, or one agent is simply better at the next step. Starting over means re-explaining everything. A handoff carries the important parts across.
When a handoff makes sense
- A usage limit lands in the middle of a task. See what to do when you hit a usage limit.
- You want another model to review or finish the work.
- The current chat is long and cluttered, and a clean start with the key facts would be better.
Do it in a minute
- Open Herdbell, pick the chat, and press ⌘H. Herdbell builds the handoff from the chat record on your Mac.
- Press Return for Copy Quick, or Shift+Return for Copy Full.
- Use the buttons under the card to open the other agent, then paste.
Three checks before you carry on
- Read the goal line. The first thing in the handoff is what you originally asked for. Correct it if the job changed.
- Glance at the changed files. Make sure the next agent starts from the state you expect, ideally with your work committed in git.
- Say what is next. Add one sentence about the very next step, so the new agent does not repeat finished work.
What a handoff cannot do
It carries the facts from the chat and project, not the other agent's memory or reasoning. It is built without an AI model, so it is only as complete as the record it reads. Treat it as a strong starting brief, not a perfect transfer.
Common questions
Can I hand a chat from Claude Code to Codex?
Yes. A handoff is plain text, so you can paste it into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or Antigravity.
Does the handoff include my code?
It lists the files that changed and the commands that ran. It does not copy the files themselves, because the next agent works in the same project folder.
